“A Meeting of Parallel Visions” is a photographic project that I initiated with my mother, Rita Clarebout. This project is based on a beloved family walk that we have taken together since my childhood. As we revisit this familiar route, each step presents an opportunity to capture our unique perspectives through photography.
Although my mother initially had little experience with photography, her desire to capture her own moments grew. This wish arose from her frequent companionship during my photography sessions. While I was photographing, she would often point out interesting subjects and express a desire for me to capture them. This encouraged me to motivate her to take the camera into her own hands, leading her to create her own images.
The aim of this walk is to isolate specific subjects from the familiar landscape that has become so commonplace for us through the many times we have traversed it. Rediscovering this well-known environment allows us to gain a fresh perspective on details that are easily overlooked.
What makes this project special is how our different approaches emerge. My mother’s photography is characterized by careful framing and the arrangement of various elements within a single image. She prefers a classic, horizontal approach to landscape photography. In contrast, I focus more on specific subjects and primarily shoot in a vertical format. These contrasts in style and perspective create an engaging visual dialogue between our works.
“A Meeting of Parallel Visions” is not only a documentation of a cherished walk but also an exploration of how two generations perceive and capture the same environment differently.
